Moree’s beloved St Philomena’s School has celebrated the official opening of a series of major upgrades to its historic campus. Founded in 1898 by the Sisters of Mercy, the Catholic school has served generations of families on the black‑soil plains【2567926552904†L170-L175】. The latest works include modern learning spaces, improved accessibility and new facilities for sport and the arts.

The project was blessed by Bishop John Doe at a ceremony attended by students, alumni and dignitaries. Sister Mary Johnson, one of the school’s longest-serving teachers, spoke about the legacy of the pioneering Sisters who walked from Gunnedah more than a century ago to establish the convent and school. “They built this community from the ground up,” she said. “These upgrades honour their dedication and prepare us for the future.”

School principal Fiona Taylor said the new classrooms embrace contemporary pedagogy, with flexible learning zones, breakout areas and integrated technology. A state‑of‑the‑art hall will host performances and community events, while accessible ramps and lifts ensure all students can participate fully.

Parent committee chair Mark Evans thanked the local and state governments for their funding support. “These facilities will benefit not just our children but the wider Moree community,” he said. “We’re proud to see St Philomena’s continue to thrive.” The upgrades mark a new chapter in the school’s long history, ensuring it remains a cornerstone of education in the region.
